Bus Ministry
The Bus Ministry plays a very important role in fulfilling Jesus' wish of having the children brought unto Him! Sumiton Ministries provides FREE bus transportation to any in the church area who have no way to get to church. We will be happy to provide a ride for children and adults alike. The buses are used for transporting riders to and from our Sunday and Wednesday ministries. The Bus Ministry allows our church to go into our communities and minister to the families, help them when they are in need and allow them a way to get to church. This ministry is in great need of volunteer chaperones, please contact David Gray at 205.648.8375 for more information.
To schedule a ride please call the following:

Food Bank
Jesus admonishes us in Matthew 25:45 to feed, "...the least of these ...", and in so doing it will be as though we are doing it unto Him. Individuals and families that are out of work, or otherwise having a hard time, are in need of non-perishable food items. The usual holiday seasons are when food is often collected but are certainly not the only times people are hungry throughout the year and it is for this reason our food bank is always in need of money and volunteers. The Food Bank is held the fourth Thursday of each month. Sumiton Ministries has been helping our community for over 20 years providing spiritual and physical nourishment to the needy. Items are purchased through the United Way of Birmingham through contributions from our congregation and volunteers. This is a ministry that requires a lot of time, but is very rewarding, If you would like more information or to contribute to this ministry, please call the church office.
New Christian Mentoring
Through direction and enabling power of the Holy Spirit, the Christian Mentoring Ministry increases discipleship capabilities. Statistically, as we disciple new Christians their chances of "backsliding" greatly diminishes. Many new Christians revert back to their old lifestyle due out of ignorance, while others feel "thrown to the wolves" with a lack of understanding the basic principles of Christianity. The primary purpose of the New Christian Mentor Ministry is to love, encourage, and assimilate into ministry those who have just accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. With our commitment, knowledge, and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, new Christians will be encouraged to become vital, effective parts of the Body of Christ.
Volunteering as a new Christian mentor:
| 1. |
Teaches you to pray for others and enhances your personal prayer life. |
| 2. |
Engraves scriptures in your heart as you mentor and disciple new Christians. |
| 3. |
Gives you an outward vision for mankind because mentoring a new Christian pulls the focus off of yourself and onto someone else who is depending on your wisdom. |
| 4. |
Gives you boldness and confidence in praying and ministering to anyone at anytime under any circumstance. |
Mentors should display honesty, integrity, and discipline in every area of their lives. Let's move forward together as we "reap the harvest and keep the harvest." If you would like information on the New Christian Mentoring program to benefit or volunteer, please contact the church office at 648-3257. (Director - Wanda Self)
Missions
In His last days with His disciples after the resurrection Jesus commissioned the apostles to make disciples. It is our desire at Sumiton Ministries to be a part of fulfilling the great commission to make disciples of the nations.
If you would like to be apart of our Mission team, please call the church office at 205.648.3257.
Share Closet
Kathy Gray began the Share Closet, which came about as she was working with our bus ministry children. God burdened her heart to obtain clothing for the bus children and their families. Our goal is to meet material needs in our community and in doing so fulfill Mathew 25-36. "Naked ye clothed me, I was in prison and ye came unto me." We also enjoy the annual Fashion Share Event in which needy women and children in the community enjoy a fun-filled day of fashion. We present a fashion show, give out helpful beauty tips and allow attendees to take home clothing and toilettes to their families. We invite anyone who would like to help us in this ministry. You may bring your donations to the Family Life Center Wednesday nights between 6:00pm - 7:30pm or contact the church office for other drop-off times at 648-3257. (Directors - Shirley Newman, Jerldean Bland and Kathy Gray)
Spanish Church
Sumiton Ministries started a Spanish ministry several years ago to reach Spanish-speaking people. The Spanish Ministry holds service at 10:45AM every Sunday morning in the Fellowship Hall. Through the avenues of evangelism, discipleship, and edification, the Spanish Ministry's goal is to reach the Hispanic community in our city. |
